Resumo
Este trabalho visa discutir a relação entre escravidão e liberdade no Brasil Império através de um breve contexto sobre a escravidão no pós independência e sobre as leis que visaram o fim do tráfico de cativos para o Brasil e as que tinham como foco a abolição gradual da escravidão. Identificamos que após a Independência o país manteve sua estrutura escravocrata inalterada e que as Leis adotadas em 1831, 1850, 1871 e 1855 não tiveram como intenção principal acabar com a escravização de pessoas, mas sim mantê-la pelo maior tempo possível.
Abstract
This study aims to discuss the relationship between slavery and freedom in Imperial Brazil by providing a brief context on slavery postindependence and the laws that targeted the end of the slave trade to Brazil, as well as those focused on the gradual abolition of slavery. We identify that after Independence, the country maintained its unaltered slaveholding structure, and the laws enacted in 1831, 1850, 1871, and 1855 were not primarily intended to end the enslavement of people but rather to sustain it for as long as possible.
